Water Fire Steam by Mitzi Zilka -- BOOK BEGINNINGS

 BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAYS

What are you reading this week? Please share the opening sentence (or so) with us here on Book Beginnings on Fridays! You can also share from a book that caught your fancy, even if you rae not reading it right now.

MY BOOK BEGINNING

Thick smoke filled the morning air.

-- from Water Fire Steam by Mitzi Zilka (2022, Maxfiggy Press). This lively novel is based on real life events in the 1880s when a fire swept through Spokane Falls, Washington and the city's fancy new water system was blamed for not quenching the flames. A young East Coast engineer, Rolla Alan Jones, was scapegoated for the catastrophe and forced to resign. Jones had to fight his way back from ignominy or leave the community he thought was his new home.

Water Fire Steam is a wonderful book of historical fiction with a timeless story of redemption and forgiveness. It has definite holiday gift potential and would make a good book club pick.

THE FRIDAY 56

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

MY FRIDAY 56

From Water Fire Steam:
The buffalo did not flinch. Rolla found a log, waived it over his head, and roared like a grizzly, a trick his father taught him when frightening off animals bigger than himself.
