What are you doing for Halloween this year? Corona is making things pretty weird. I don't think trick-or-treating is officially cancelled her in Portland, but I don't think many families are planning on going out or handing out. Which is sad because I love seeing all the little kids in their costumes. Next year!

The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin:
Once Upon a time –
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times –
There once was a man from Nantucket –
Truman giggled.
That's an odd beginning, but I loved this book! The story sucked me in from the get go. It is about how A group of New York high society ladies befriended Truman Capote in the 1950s, before he became super famous, and how he turned on them so spectacularly 20 years later when his career was coming in for a crash landing. He and they reached high peaks of fame and glamour during those 20 years, the highest being Truman's black and white ball in 1966.

But Truman, with his shrewd eyes, his interest in everything yet an ability to home in on the most intriguing, unusual aspect, is talent for understanding people and what made them tick, his vast knowledge of literature and craft, his precise, yet expansive vocabulary – Truman was an intellectual, she was certain of it. An intellectual with a love of gossip and high society and low life, to be sure.
