The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin on BOOK BEGINNINGS

BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAYS

It's Halloween week but I'm not reading anything scary. Are you? I don't like scary books!

What do you have going for Book Beginnings on Fridays? Please share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading this week. Leave your link below. Please use the #bookbeginnings hashtag on social media so we can find each other.

What are you doing for Halloween this year? Corona is making things pretty weird. I don't think trick-or-treating is officially cancelled her in Portland, but I don't think many families are planning on going out or handing out. Which is sad because I love seeing all the little kids in their costumes. Next year!

MY BOOK BEGINNING

The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin:

Once Upon a time –

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times –

There once was a man from Nantucket –

Truman giggled.

That's an odd beginning, but I loved this book! The story sucked me in from the get go. It is about how A group of New York high society ladies befriended Truman Capote in the 1950s, before he became super famous, and how he turned on them so spectacularly 20 years later when his career was coming in for a crash landing. He and they reached high peaks of fame and glamour during those 20 years, the highest being Truman's black and white ball in 1966.

THE FRIDAY 56

Freda at Freda's Voice hosts another teaser event on Fridays. Participants share a two-sentence teaser from page 56 of the book they are reading -- or from 56% of the way through the audiobook or ebook. Please visit Freda's Voice for details and to leave a link to your post.

MY FRIDAY 56

But Truman, with his shrewd eyes, his interest in everything yet an ability to home in on the most intriguing, unusual aspect, is talent for understanding people and what made them tick, his vast knowledge of literature and craft, his precise, yet expansive vocabulary – Truman was an intellectual, she was certain of it. An intellectual with a love of gossip and high society and low life, to be sure.

  2. I'm actually more curious about his relationship with Harper Lee. Is she mentioned?

  3. Hi Gilion,

I have, just recently, taken to reading fictionalised novels about true life events, so this one might well make it to my reading list - and what's not to love about that glamorous and eye-catching cover art!

I don't think that anything has been officially 'banned' over here, however most Halloween, November 5th, Remembrance Day, and Christmas events, have been shelved by the organisers.

There are some smaller cut-down events popping up locally, but with Covid cases on the rise as they are, I can't see us mixing it with anyone quite that closely!

Thanks for hosting and have a peaceful weekend :)

  5. I admit my Halloween reading tends not to be overly scary. A good seasonal cozy mystery will do the trick. Or something involving witches. :-)

I'm so glad to hear you loved Swans of Fifth Avenue. It's on my TBR pile and I look forward to reading it.

    Have a great week!
