MY BOOK BEGINNING
I'm standing on the red railway car that sits abandoned next to the barn. The wind soars, whipping my hair across my face and pushing a chill down the open neck of my shirt.
-- Educated by Tara Westover. This is my book club's pick for our January meeting, so it is time I got around to one of the most popular books of last year.
Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

ReplyDeleteIs this where we join in? After I got this blog post, I went to the book I'm reading, "Benediction," by Kent Haruf.

Oooph. By page ten I was already in tears. I have spent the past two Januarys reading "Plainsong" and "Eventide," the three previous books in this trilogy about Holt, Colorado, so I'm now on the last one. Haruf has a quiet way of telling a story; you might think that nothing happens, but it does, just at a slower and quieter pace. I think he deserves a spot on the Great American Writers shelf; of the contemporary writers out there (although he passed away a couple of years ago), he is head and shoulders above almost all of them. In my opinion, of course! ;-)
