Book Beginning: Suicide of the West by Jonah Goldberg

BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAYS

THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

MY BOOK BEGINNING

Human nature is real. Few statements are less controversial among the people who study the subject and more controversial among people who don't.

-- Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy by Jonah Goldberg. Such a tantalizing beginning!

Despite it's grim title, this is essentially an optimistic book, only because Goldberg makes a good case for saving American Democracy. And he does it with equal amounts of philosophy, political argument, and humor. It's a great read.

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Instagram, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

  1. Glad to hear it is optimistic.

I'm featuring American Wife today, a fictionalized version of former first lady Laura Bush's life.

  4. I do think that a liberal sprinkling of humour is necessary for a book with such a big subject to discuss and whilst this probably isn't one I would read myself, although I know really should, I shall be passing details on to my husband, as this one is right up his street, especialy given the political turmoil on both sides of the Atlantic, right now!

I do hope that I haven't broken any rules here and feel free to edit if I have ... However, alongside my taditional BBOF post, I have also linked to a Blog Tour post I published earier this week, as a 'Book Beginnings' extract was my allocated article to share.

Thanks for sharing your book and hosting BBOF. Have a great weekend :)

  7. This sounds like an interesting read! Especially since you mention that it's optimistic. I always expect books like this to be really depressing or stressful.

  9. Thinking of losing our Democracy makes me feel sick on the stomach. The idea has been brought up many times this year.
