MY BOOK BEGINNING
In the fall of 2008, my colleague, Peter, asked me if I might be interested in working with the Holocaust survivor, Joe Koenig, and his family to tell his story.
-- Ghost Writer: A Story About Telling a Holocaust Story by Beth Benedix. After Benedix ghost wrote a memoir for a holocaust survivor, at his urging, she wrote this book about her own experience of searching through his past and telling his story.
Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

So, this book is about how a ghost writer wrote a memoir?
ReplyDeleteWriting someone else's story would be tricky to pull off without adding too much of your own voice. It would be made triply difficult if the person was a Holocaust survivor.
Sounds like a powerful book.
I am having trouble finding out much about either this book, or the memoir itself, but I don't think it is one for me.
ReplyDeleteI did manage to establish that the memoir itself is only 70 odd pages long, so to write a book about how you wrote that short amount of text, does seem to be a bit of overkill, even if the memoir is quite powerful and has been well received, if only little read!
It would be good to know what you think of either / both books, in due course and thanks for hosting and sharing :)

Sounds like an interesting concept for a book. I have always wondered about the ghost writer perspective. The topic is one that is also very hard to write about, I'm sure.

ReplyDeleteI just finished another holocaust book about a topic I knew nothing. I keep thinking the eventually we will have all the stories we could possibly get out of the holocaust, but no. If you enjoy your book you might want to try Day After Night by Anita Diamont. They sound a bit similar. For Info on Day After Night
