Book Beginning: That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo

BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAYS

THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

MY BOOK BEGINNING

Though the digital clock on his bedside table in his hotel room read 5:17, Jack Griffin, suddenly wide awake, knew he wouldn't be able to get back to sleep.

-- That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo. I loved Empire Falls, for which Russo won the Pulitzer Prize, and have been meaning to read his other books for years. This one looked like a good choice for a summer read.

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Instagram, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

  1. Wow, I've never been first before. Thank you for posting early because the rest of my day is crazy.

I've been interested in reading some of Russo's other titles. This does look like a good beach read. Hope you enjoy it.

  2. Hi, I'm taking part in your meme for the first time, I think it is a great and simple idea.

I'm not familiar with Richard Russo's writing, is there a certain book of his that you would recommend Readers start with?

    Thanks,
    Allison

  3. Hi Gilion,

I too, am not familiar with Russo's writing, although with his excellent resume I feel that I should be!

It is not often that a story line like this is written from the male perspective and so well from what I can see.

I can relate to so many of the challenges Jack and Joy are going through in their lives, including Jacks early rising from your opening lines and the fact that he still has his parents ashes in his possession, not knowing quite what to do with them!

It kind of made me feel that perhaps our own mid life crises are not so strange or unusual after all!!

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend :)

  4. I agree with Yvonne - not the sort of book you think a man would write, but it looks good. I too, cannot go back to sleep, once awake at 5.17...

Happy weekend and thanks for hosting.
