Book Beginning: The Story of a New Name

BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAYS

THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

MY BOOK BEGINNING

In the spring of 1966, Lila, in a state of great agitation, entrusted to me a metal box that contained eight notebooks.

-- The Story of a New Name: Neapolitan Novels, Book Two by Elena Ferrante. I'm finding this one to be heavy going. If I weren't reading it with my ears, and at 1.25 speed, I don't know that I would get through it.

Has anyone read all four of the series? What did you think?

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Instagram, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

  3. I read the first 2/3 of the first Ferrante book and can not finish it; it is just not for me. I know it is a big selling series.

  5. I enjoyed the first one - although I don't really get the hype. I've started the second a couple of times, but it looks very long and detailed, and i think I'll wait for a long holiday to try again. Good luck, and have a great weekend.

  7. Hi Gilion,

The entire series has received some excellent ratings and reviews worldwide, but I do have to admit that it isn't something I could personally get very excited about reading. Far too long-winded by the sounds of things!

Thanks for sharing though and I'm sure that other participants will read and enjoy :)

  8. Hi!

Oh, how intriguing. Immediately I'm drawn in, wondering what is going to be written in the notebooks.

I've not heard of this before... where have I been?

    Hope you enjoy!

  12. The cover makes me think it would be heavy. Hope you make it through it and it's worth it. Sometimes the ending makes everything okay.

  14. That's too bad this is slow going as I love that beginning! I have heard that Ferrante can be really slow which is one of the things that have kept me from reading. I know a lot of people love her but a book you just start to connect with after the first 150 pages is not for me!

  15. I am sorry it's so slow going for you. I hope you find it worth listening to in the end, at least!

  16. Running late this week. Is it possible the novel might be extra slow going because it is a translation? It might have a different pace in Italian?

  17. I really need to join up with this wonderful meme soon! It has been too long.
