Lugdunum, ancient capital of Gaul, Roman town, medieval centre of culture, city of science, learning, medicine and theology . . . Lyon has many claims to fame.

Spotted Dick S'il Vous Plait: An English Restaurant in France by Tom Higgins. I love memoirs about British or American expats hauling off to sunnier climes, and I love restaurant memoirs -- this combines both. Perfect!

    Love the cover art on this book, even though it might trivialize what is a very serious subject to most of Brits and the French alike - their food!

    When cooked properly, British food is good enough to best any of its more pretentious rivals (Sorry about the blatant patriotism there!). But I can well imagine the initial reaction of the locals to Tom's idea ...

    Probably not one I would read, however I am sure it will be entertaining for you.

  6. I think this sounds very entertaining! Years ago I stayed with my French pen friend and one of her aunties was very scathing about English cooking, which I thought was very funny as I was struggling to eat the meal she had prepared. Of course, I didn't say a word about it. Actually, Spotted Dick is delicious.
