Book Beginning: The Pursuit of Love

THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

There is a photograph in existence of Aunt Sadie and her six children sitting around the tea-table at Alconleigh. The table is situated, as it was, is now, and ever shall be, in the hall, in front of a huge open fire of logs.

-- The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. I read this post-WWII classic in high school and am reveling in the reread. Perfect for Christmas weekend!

The cover makes it look sappy, but it's not. It's crisp, witty, sophisticated, and through-and-through charming.

  1. Somehow I've missed this one. I'll have to look for it, although I have to admit I'm a bit confused by the "open file of logs."

Thank you for hosting this week.

  3. This probably isn't one for me, however I have heard good things about the classical style of writing of the author. Which is why I was slightly taken aback when I checked out the full premise on Goodreads, only to be presented by this as a paperback cover option for the newly re-printed book ...

It just looked so obscenely out of place somehow, which is why I object so much to the classics being tampered with - What do you think?

Have a great Christmas and thanks for hosting :)

  4. I have a copy of this on my shelf that I am forever meaning to get to and somehow never do! I will definitely have to prioritise it next year!

  6. Roberta: My typo! Fire, not file.

Yvonne: The cover on goodreads is just weird. My copy is actually a hardback with a vintage looking drawing of a 1920s party.

  8. I know I've had Nancy Mitford recommended to me before, but I can't recall which book. I'm a fan of post-war fiction, though, and your write-up makes it sound intriguing.

  9. This sounds like one of those books I "should" read ... and that I would actually enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation and for hosting Book Beginnings.

  11. I was just thinking that the cover looked like some early Hollywood movie and I'd need to cue the schmaltz when I read your comment about the cover looking sapping and the book isn't. Now I am intrigued.
