Book Beginning: A Christmas Carol

THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

Marley was dead: to begin with.

-- A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I've never read this; I just assumed I had because I've seen so many movies and plays and cartoons. I decided to finally read the book, or at least the audiobook.

And it's terrific! I always forget how funny Dickens is. There are droll asides, witty bits, and sarcasm that is lost in the syrupy movie adaptations.

  6. Classics are just that for a reason, the original versions are always the best!

I read this one many years ago and alomg with so many other greats of their times, I keep promising myself that I will get around to some re-reads ... One day!

A good seasonal choice to compliment your lovely daily Christmas countdown - Enjoy :)

  9. I have never read this book and really just recently forgave Dickens for my high school required reading trauma! This book is definitely one I want to read in the future - hopefully next Christmas. I hope you're enjoying it!

  10. I've always wanted to read this one but never actually gotten around to it. I might have to add it to my holiday reading list.

  11. Great Old Favorite to feature in December. Like others I have never read it just watched various shows based on the story.

  12. And it's short! The audiobook is not even three hours long, unlike most Dickens books.

  13. I think I may have "read" it in college. The seventh graders at the school where I teach read it earlier in the semester, and the week before Thanksgiving, we took them to see the musical version at one of our local (and by local, I mean an hour away) universities. It was fabulous.

  15. I have a copy of this classic, beautifully illustrated by Greg Hildebrandt, and I read it every Christmas. Thanks for the reminder to share it with my granddaughter. Thank you for hosting Book Beginnings too.

  16. It's been years since I read the book, but I knew that first line. Great choice.

Last night, I put in the wrong link to my entry, but I've put in the correct one now. Sorry about that.
