TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

One moment Nicholas Elliott was at Ascot Racecourse, watching the favorite, Quashed, come romping home at 7-2, and the next, rather to his own surprise, he was a spy.

-- A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal by Ben Macintyre and John le Carré. Great first line!

My husband is reading this and he begged me to read it to so he could talk to me about is because he loves it so much.

  1. Nice BB. Makes me wonder how on earth he became a spy, it's straight in there and you can almost sense the shock from the character.

  4. And? Have you started it yet? My husband asked me to listen to a John le Carre with him on a road trip, and I kept nodding off. Maybe this one is better?

  6. I LOVE that first line. Suddenly he was a spy. Ha! Like suddenly he spilled his drink or suddenly he had a heart attack. Love it.

  7. Hi Gilion,

I too, enjoy a good spy story from time to time.

However so much press and television time has been given over to Kim Philby and his cohorts over the years, that I don't really feel the urge to read about it any more.

I also personally, think we are all living in a bubble if we believe that spying between nations doesn't still exist today, only on a much grander scale and in a much more serious and dangerous way!

Ooops! I guess this just goes to prove your husband's point about the discussions this book might provoke - Enjoy your conversations :)

  9. I do enjoy reading about conspiracies, spies and espionage and I believe it is alive and well today. If we didn't keep an eye on others, how we would know what's going on. I think the biggest problem today is with the terrorists. They don't play by the rules. Enjoy!

  13. Makes me wonder how that happened so quickly. Sounds like he didn't mean for it to happen either. Here's my Friday post. Happy reading!
