Book Beginning: Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child

THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

"Now, dearie, I will require a hot plate for my appearance on Professor Duhamel's program."

-- Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child by Bob Spitz. This comprehensive biography moves along at a fast clip. Even the "main" parts that were covered in My Life in France and Julie & Julia (book and movie) seem fresh and new. I love it.

  3. I never understood what a treasure Julia Childs was until she was gone and all these folks wrote books about her. Sigh.

  7. Hi Gilion,

Julia's name is one I haven't come across before, so it may be that she was rather US centric, although I never tended to follow many of the baking programmes anyway, either recently or historically.

We had one or two of our own ground-breaking, early adopter chefs, here in the UK at about the same time as Julia appears to have been at her height of popularity and similarly, French food was the most accessible to us as a nation for sharing and learning from.

Probably not a book for me, but thanks for sharing your opening lines and for hosting BBOF this week :)

  13. I haven't heard of this one before but it sounds amazing. I love Julia Child she's one of my all time favorites. My parents use to watch her on PBS when I was a kid. I hope you enjoy it adding it to my list.

  15. I look forward to the book. It is waiting on my shelf, along with My Life in France, and As Always, Julia. Years ago, I read a biography of her that was very good - Appetite for Life by Noel Riley Fitch.

  16. Ooookaayyy... makes me wonder why on earth she'd want a hotplate for someone's show lol. I like it, it's quirky!
