MY BOOK BEGINNING
I was first seduced by a lemon at the tender age of six.
-- From the author's introduction to The Lemon Cookbook: 50 Sweet & Savory Recipes to Brighten Every Meal by Ellen Jackson, published by Sasquatch Books.
Ellen Jackson goes on to describe a "lemon stick" -- a treat made from a peppermint stick stuck into a lemon so the candy is used as a straw to suck the juice. We did the same thing with oranges when I was a kid, although is sounds so weird, I thought I made it up until I read the beginning of Jackson's new cookbook.
Great BB! It's totally unique! It makes me wonder what on earth is going on lol. Seduced by a lemon?! I'm also wondering if it's some kind of joke :D

ReplyDeleteI love lemons, especially lemon drinks. I wish I could get the canned lemon soda you can buy in Europe. I can get the lemon soda that is made by Orangina, but I don't like it as much. Do you actually read a cookbook front to back, or browse and look at the gorgeous pictures and seeing what ingredients you already have?

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child, much of the limited supply of fruit we had access to, was imported and therefore very expensive. Apples, pears and plums were our main indigenous fruits, so oranges were a luxury usually reserved for Christmas and fresh lemons were almost unseen. Packaged lemon juice was available for that special baking treat, but the whole 'real' fruit were seldom seen.
Having said all that, I now love anything 'lemony'. I make a lot of savoury dishes using lemon oil and I enjoy nothing better than a slice of lemon drizzle cake :)

A lemon stick sounds an acquired taste, a mix of peppermint and lemon and I'm not sure I'd like it - does it still have that bitter/sour taste that makes your mouth pucker? But I do love Lemon Meringue Pie and Lemon Drizzle cake and you can't beat home-made Lemonade.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little kid I would eat lemons like they were oranges. My parents thought I was weird. I still love things that are sour, tart.
ReplyDeleteSee, I wouldn't call myself a major lemon fan but I do love the taste of it in baking and cooking. Also, I use it to make icing sugar which is, admittedly, one of the best things on this planet! Thanks for sharing and hosting :) I hope you have a great weekend!
