YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

A fug of tobacco smoke and damp clammy air hit her as she entered the café. She had come in from the rain and drops of water still trembled like delicate dew on the fur coats of some of the women inside.

-- Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.  I love Kate Atkinson's books, but the premise of this one didn't appeal to me. The main character dies over and over and keeps living her life over and over, living a little longer each time. It's not Groundhog Day -- the story jumps ahead quite a lot each time without redoing every singe bit.  But it is definitely one I am going to have to just let flow.  I am listening to the audio book, which helps.

  1. I'm a big fan of Groundhog Day, but if each time it goes a little bit farther, is it because she is doing something right and dying a different way?
I am starting the book I chose tonight. It's funny, I wasn't excited to read it and after doing this and page 56 I'm intrigued!

  2. Sounds like you may be like me. I will listen to a book I might not finish reading.

  3. I tried reading Life After Life when it first came out and had difficulty getting into it. Although I will admit that her writing was wonderful and your Book Beginning reminded me of that.

  6. The main character dies over and over again? No, that book is not for me.

    Thanks for hosting another week!

  7. I read this book with some of the women from work. I liked the beginning and end, but thought the middle dragged a bit. The bit at the beginning drew me in a lot! I couldn't wait to get to that part of the book.

    Happy reading!

  8. I've been wanting to read this one but haven't gotten to it yet. I agree that I'm more willing to take a risk on a book that's audio than actual reading.

  11. Hang in there! Life After Life is great, but those beginnings do get repetitive. Don't worry, you stop having the snowy morning when she's born after a bit.

    Thanks for your honest opinion.

ENJOY your weekend. Can't believe it is Friday AGAIN.
