YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

My mother's eyes follow the lines of my dress, and I can tell my body passes inspection this time, because my hair receives more attention this time.

-- from "Every Eyelash, Mole, and Freckle" by Carrie Kabak, the first essay in For Keeps: Women Tell the Truth About Their Bodies, Growing Older, and Acceptance, edited by Victoria Zackheim

This is the last book that I am reading for my personal 2014 TBR challenge. I love the exuberance of the cover!

  1. Hi Gilion,

Oh Dear! I can relate to this book far too closely and it probably wouldn't make for very comfortable reading!

Luckily my mother was never in a position to pass comment about the way I looked, from when I was a very early age, however I can imagine your opening lines causing more than a little distress!

Definitely not a book for me, but thanks for sharing and I do hope to be able to continue supporting BBOF into 2015, thanks for hosting.

    Yvonne.

  2. Those opening lines definitely make me want to read more. I'm curious about the relationship between this daughter and her mother. Sounds difficult, and that makes for a good story, doesn't it?

  3. The cover definitely looks like a lot of fun, although the BB is bringing back memories from awkward family parties where you get sized up by people you haven't seen since you were five! Thanks for hosting :) Have a good weekend!

  4. The cover does look good.

It would be a bit upsetting to have your mother scrutinize you like that.

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. A topic all of us know something about. I remember that my Mother kept trying to make me something I was not and it was really frustrating for both of us.

  6. This almost sounds like Mommie Dearest. Happy Holidays to everyone!

  7. That doesn't sound like a particularly healthy mother daughter relationship. It does sound like it'd make for interesting reading.

  8. I was always aware of my mother's eyes on me and my choice in wardrobe. It wasn't always a good feeling.

  9. I am glad my mother was not like that. It's damaging.
Sounds like a powerful and emotional read.
