Sorry for the missing linky! I set up the post early because I am on vacation this week and apparently forgot the linky.  I have had no luck trying to fix it on my phone. Please leave your link in a comment. Things will be back to normal next week!

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

It was five in the morning. Inspector Burden had seen more dawns than most men, but he had never quite become jaundiced by them, especially summer dawns.

-- A New Lease of Death by Ruth Rendell. This is the second book in her mystery series featuring Inspector Wexford. It bothers me that the title has "of" in it instead of being A New Lease on Death, like a play on "a new lease on life."

  1. LOL. The "of" in the title bothered me too! It felt like a typo. I guess I'm in a cranky mood because the opening sentence beginning with "it was" bothered me too. It was a dark and stormy night?
I hope the story is a good one!

  2. That seems odd to me, too.

Are we having a Mr. Linky today?

  5. Jaundiced? Odd term to use...
I joined in the beginnings today, since it is what I used for the 56.

  6. A murder mystery. Can't complain about that, although the title is a bit weird.

  9. I don't know this series, and I didn't like the first sentence all that much. I hope that the rest of the book is better!

  10. Hope you are enjoying your vacation. That takes priority. :-) I love mysteries, but it sounds like some commenters have an issue with the book right out of the gate. I would continue reading, because sometimes the good stuff comes later. Happy reading.

  11. My first reaction is to start arguing with the premise of that first sentence. I worked on a ranch for a while - we were always up before the dawn and I can't think of a single day where the sight of the sun rising wasn't a cause for joy.

  12. Interesting opening line! Surprised to see the word jaundice as I always think of babies with that word! Haha!

  14. It's not telling much in that beginning. It's definitely a mystery novel.:) I would like to read one of her mysteries. Enjoy.

  22. "Lease of life" (or death) does sound odd to my American ears, but I think that's the way the Brits (sorry, the English!) say it. I'm sort of surprised they didn't change it for the US market. I love Wexford, but don't think I've read this one.

  23. The title does seem a little odd. Maybe it's one of those that make more sense after you read it.
