YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

It was called Good Friday, but to a 10-year-old boy living at the mouth of the Necanicum River on Oregon's North Coast, every Friday was good.
-- The Next Tsunami: Living on a Restless Coast by Bonnie Henderson, published by OSU Press.

Showing that non-fiction can be as entertaining as the best novel, Henderson mixes science, history, and first-hand accounts to explain the risk of earthquakes and resulting tidal waves to the northwest coast of the United States.  Henderson shows how the next mega-quake under the Pacific Ocean will generate a tsunami "likely to be the most devastating natural disaster in the history of the United States."

  2. I enjoy nonfiction that is written in the style of fiction -- with a story arc, interesting characters, etc. (If you haven't read Isaac's Storm and The Devil in the White City, you'd like them.) This book sounds scary to me since I live in the Seattle area!

  3. Tsunamis are probably among the scariest natural disasters I can think of! Must be quite the read!

  4. Hi Gilion,

I think of all those times I have pestered hubbie to consider moving to a property at the coast .... I'm sure that reading this book would certainly change my mind about that pretty quick!!!

Despite this probably not being a book for me, those first lines in themselves, are very thought provoking.

Thanks for sharing and hosting. Have a great weekend,

    Yvonne.

  5. I agree with Sandra about Isaac's Storm being similar and a very good read. Different coast, but both related to natural events.

  6. We are having Tsunami in India. A new Govt. A new leader. No one expected him to have a landslide victory.....

And US did not want him to win....!!!

    NAMO NAMO.

  7. Non fiction can be as heart-wrenching as fiction, when it's written well! I remember how as a child every Friday was a gift because you got two whole days to do as you pleased! I hope you have a great weekend :)

  10. This sounds like the kind of non-fiction I'd like in terms of writing but I'm not sure I could handle the subject! It definitely sounds like an interesting book despite me being a bit too chicken to read it!
