YOUR BOOK BEGINNING

MY BOOK BEGINNING

Jonah knew the 59th Street subway station well enough that he did not have to look up from his iPhone as he made his way among its corridors and commuters to the track.

-- The Book of Jonah by Joshua Max Feldman.

Jonah is a promising young Manhattan attorney whose life is about to become unrecognizable to him. Feldman's debut novel is a contemporary re-imagining of the biblical book of Jonah.

  1. Interesting beginning. Why does the iPhone have to be there so early!?

  2. Good point. Instant recognition of the time setting and his rough age? The iPhone pegs him as a young professional bored with his commute.

  3. If this follows the story of Jonah he is in for a very rough time.

  4. I can't help but wonder what the "whale" is in this story!

  5. Hi Gilion,

Ah! the iPhone, one of my pet hates. As I work in retail, it would be so satisfying to be able to refuse to serve a customer, who spends all their time at the till point talking on their phone, without even giving the poor checkout operator the courtesy of a passing glance of recognition!

And as for dodging the same offenders in a public place, so that they don't need to take their eyes off the screen for two seconds, just in case something momentous happens and they should miss it!!!

Maybe something really momentous, like being run over and hospitalised would fix the problem .... At least they would have the time to let all their friends know!!

Seriously, this is probably not a book for me, however I do hope that you are enjoying it.

Thanks for hosting and have a great weekend.

    Yvonne.

  6. He might know the area well, but he shouldn't be so hooked on his phone.
