Book Beginnings: Walking Distance

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, please tweet a link to your post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I also recently signed up for Google+ and have a button over there in the right-hand column to join my circles or whatever it is. I don't really understand yet how that one works.

MR. LINKY: Please leave a link to your post below. If you don't have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.

MY BOOK BEGINNING

About ten years ago we decided to walk the aptly named Long Trail in our home state of Vermont.

-- Walking Distance: Extraordinary Hikes for Ordinary People by Robert and Martha Manning.

I love this book! It is prompting a lot of armchair traveler fantasies.

Walking Distance is oversized and full of gorgeous pictures of hiking trails all over the world. The husband/wife authors describe the hikes and the amenities (or lack of) along the routes. It is the perfect combination of practical guide and inspiration.

  1. I'd love to do something like that one day (ie have incredible travelling experiences, then write a book about them using lots of my holiday snaps for fodder!!)
What a great way to earn a living :-)

  3. Sounds like an interesting book. I'm currently training for a 3-day, 50 mile walk, so have been logging lots of walks lately!

    Have a great weekend!

  4. Very nice. Makes we wish for warmer weather sooner so I can jog on the trail.

  5. That sounds interesting. Vermont isn't that far from me, and we're always looking for new things to do!

  6. That brings back memories of my lifelong dream to hike the Appalachian Trail - in one long hike. I still have a glimmer of hope to do it but it isn't likely. Can hardly wait to recover my strength and stamina so I can take hikes here in PA.

  7. This sounds like a lovely book. Even if I didn't actually take the hikes (I live in the Pacific Northwest), I'd enjoy the photography and reading about them.

  8. Thanks for hosting! My husband and I like to hike on our very rural property. I bet the photos are beautiful!

  9. The first sentence in the book I'm reading is "'Eh bien, mon prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now no more than family estates of the Bonapartes.'" This has been true for quite some time, and promises to be so for even longer.

  12. I love walking in nature. Sounds like a good way to get a taste of it (virtually) while in the midst of winter.
