MY BOOK BEGINNING
Mama and I woke early, put on our Sunday Dresses, and stole down all three sets of stairs from the garret to the cellar, slipping out the servants' entrance before the Van Lews were even out of bed.The Secrets of Mary Bowser by Lois Leveen.
See my interview of Lois, here, with links to event information, reviews, and more.
Good beginning - sounds like someone is on a mission!
ReplyDeleteI like that; use of "Mama" always gets me, must be the Southern girl in me... and opening with a little mystery is always advisable.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like they want to be out of the house before the others wake up -- but why? Good sentence to start the book.
ReplyDeleteNice atmosphere in a single sentence: "garret" always gets the point across.
ReplyDelete(My first time participating in this fun Friday event!)
Oh, I haven't heard of this one, but I like the sound of it!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good book! Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteI like this scene. The cover is nice too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opening!
ReplyDeleteHi Gilion,
ReplyDeleteA new author to me, but I love those opening lines.
I was too intrigued about what they were slipping out to do so early, so I cheated a little and checked out the full synopsis.
The book cover makes complete sense now as well!
This sounds like a 'must read' for me. I don't do true stories, but as this is fiction based on a true story, that doesn't really count.
I hope that you enjoy the book and I am looking forward to the review.
Yvonne
I do wonder why they are sneaking out so early and who are the Van Lews? A very intriguing beginning.
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!
That sounds like an exciting start to a story!
ReplyDeleteThe notion of "Sunday Dresses" took me back in time to an entirely different way of life. The impression that the pair might be servants draws interest as well. Where are they going?
ReplyDeleteInteresting, indeed.
