The next day, my crew well armed, I informed Hunt that I was to sail that week. "Our preparations mostly done, you can stay and finish salting the fish and then sail to Spain and sell the good, Poor John having a ready market there."-- The Leaves of Fate by George Robert Minkoff.
This is the third volume of Minkoff's In the Land of Whispers trilogy about Jamestown and America's earliest days. I haven't read the first two, The Weight of Smoke and The Dragons of the Storm, but I this one is good on its own.
It takes a while to get into because it is written the way they talked in the 1700s. But it is a great yarn once you get into it.

Sounds like a good series for American history enthusiasts. Might have to take a look at it, but I guess I should start at the beginning. Excellent teaser!
