99 Novels: The Best in English Since 1939 by Anthony Burgess.
It was the arrival of 1984 (the year, not the book) that inspired Burgess to compile a list of what he considered to be the 99 best novels published since 1939. I've been working on
the list of novels for several years, but just now got around to reading the book. I wish I hadn't waited so long.
I've heard of this book, but never seen it around. Of course this sort of list is inescapably intriguing, and usually only serves to add another 90+ books to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteLouise: You are so right! I can't resist a list, so this kind of book is dangerous for me too!
ReplyDeleteThere are many books on this list I have never heard of, which is inspiring. So nice to think that no matter how many we read, there will always be more good books out there.
ReplyDeleteWell that looks interesting. I've got a hold on it.
ReplyDeleteI've probably asked you this before, but have you seen David Lodge's "The Art of Fiction"? Easily my favorite book about books, and really a big influence in what I've read over the last, heavens, 12 years or so.
JG: Yes, there will always be plenty of books to add to my TBR list, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteMichael: You have mentioned Lodge's book to me. It is definitely on my wish list. I keep an eye out, but haven't found a reasonably-priced coy yet. I am excited to find one and read it!
