Teaser Tuesday: Strangers and Brothers

With success behind him, George remarked more often about a partnership "being not too far away."  For the first time, he showed some impatience about his oewn future: but he was no longer worried over Martineau.
-- Strangers and Brothers by C. P. Snow.

I am sucked into this story about a progressive young lawyer forging his career.  Even though the book was written in 1940 and set in 1928 in England, his work as a new lawyer in a small firm sounds so much like what my lawyer friends and I all went through. The long hours, case panic, difficult partners -- it's all the same!

This is the first book in Snow's 11-volume "Strangers and Brother's" series.  This volume is now published under the title George Passant, but I have an older edition with the Strangers and Brothers title.

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading, where you can find the official rules for this weekly event.

  1. This sounds interesting... but... eleven volumes? Wow! I have two this week. My YA teaser is from Five Flavors of Dumb and my adult teaser is from The Iron Duke. Happy reading!

  2. Funny isn't it how sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same. I'll have to check this series out. ~ Calico Contemplations

  3. Kathy: It is engrossing. Not fast-paced, but very interesting. I am sucked in.

    Thanks for leaving your teasers.

G.T.: It is a lot! But each book is a stand-alone novel. They form a series, but each has its own story. So I'll get to them all eventually.

    Thanks for the link.

  4. Calico Crazy: Sorry, you slipped in there while I was typing.

You are so right. Because this book is more about people than events, the way they relate to each other and react to their circumstances seems just as real today as when the book was written.

  6. I have to admit that I very rarely read the classics and I have no idea why.

I think it's a case of too many books and not enough time.

Reading your teaser lines, prompted me to read the full synopsis and I think I may enjoy this series, so watch this space!

Thank you for the recommendation and Best Wishes for 2011.

  7. I loved the Strangers and Brothers books. It's a shame C.P. Snow isn't more popular today - he wrote some lovely novels. Good teaser!

  10. I've got a couple of the C P Snow books sitting on my TBR shelf. Do you think it's important to start with the first one?
