Teaser Tuesday: The Mermaid and the Messerschmitt

The long rumbling noise of crumbling walls, the tinkle of broken glass.
Mother, the room, everything disappeared in a cloud of dust . . .

-- The Mermaid and the Messerschmitt: War Through a Woman's Eyes, 1939 - 1940 by Rulka Langer (ellipses in original).

This is a really amazing book! It is the memoirs of a Polish woman who lived through the Nazi siege of Warsaw at the beginning of World War II. It reads like a novel and tells just what it was like to try to live a normal life with bombs falling and armies on the move.

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading, where you can find the official rules for this weekly event.

  1. Great teaser! And thenk you for describing the book a bit, it sounds wonderful. I'd guess it's probably pretty intense in parts and maybe sad &/or troubling too. But it sounds like a book definitely worth reading.

    Thasnk you!

I hope you'll be reviewing it!

  2. Wow, this is stunning. A very intense teaser, but of course it would be, from a book like this. I'd be scared to start reading, because I doubt I could put it down.

Great choice! My own teaser, meanwhile, is in quite a different vein: a Bookishgal.

  3. Amy -- It is much more lighthearted than I had thought it would be. But fascinating.

shinyideas -- I would love to race through it. Every time I put it down, I want to go right back to it. It is that good. Thanks for the link to your teaser.

Eagle -- It was really great, all the way through. It is definitely going on my list of Christmas gifts to give this year.
