Opening Sentence of the Day: Burmese Lessons
"In a quiet street near Sule Pagoda, a woman smiles at me for no reason."
-- Burmese Lessons: A True Love Story by Karen Connelly (from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program -- I'm almost caught up on that list).
Connelly is a writer (travel, memoir, poetry, and fiction) who, while living in Thailand, went to Burma to gather information for articles she planned to write about dissident authors and artists living in that military dictatorship.
That's as far as I have read so far, but the jacket says that she is going to fall in love with a rebel leader. This could get very interesting.
This one has Book Club written all over it. I only wish it was my turn to pick the book.
NOTE
Book Beginnings on Fridays is a Friday fun "opening sentence" event hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Post the opening sentence of the book(s) you started this week and see what other books people have going.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog through Book Beginnings on Friday. Burmese Lessons sounds pretty interesting, I'm looking forward to your review on it. I'm also one of your newest followers! Feel free to check my blog out in your spare time :)

I have just started this book and it is very interesting, not at all the predictable story one might expect. I like that it's not fiction but based on real life by a seasoned traveler and one who lived in southeast Asia for a year as an exchange student before the travels mentioned in the book.
ReplyDeleteMs. C -- Thanks for visiting! You blog is wonderful, as I just discovered.
ReplyDeleteBBD -- This book is super interesting. I don't know anything about Burma (other than the food the serve me at Burma Super Star in San Francisco), so her "lessons" are lessons for me too.
A lovely opening line and I think this might be a book I would like.
ReplyDeleteI just rediscovered your blog! I adore it. I dare say that I love to read as much as you do!
ReplyDeleteI'm rediscovering blogging after a long hiatus. I just need to sit back and focus on what I truly love.
Hope to hear from you soon! Not sure if you know this, but there is a Rose City, Michigan.
Not sure, but I think we met on LibraryThing.
Lindsey
SOunds like a fabulous book and it is definitely a fabulous opening sentence
ReplyDeleteCat -- This book is incredibly interesting. She's a poet, so some of her language gets a little flowery for me, but the story is fascinating.
ReplyDeleterusselllindsey -- Welcome back! I think we did meet on LibraryThing, because I remember you thought I was in Michigan. I think there are several "Rose Cities" around -- either real name or nickname.
Becky -- It is a very good book. I know nothing about Burma and she packs in a lot of information. Incredibly interesting.
This books sounds great and I can't wait to read your review. I really like travel memoirs.
