Mailbox Monday

It looked like I was going to have an empty mailbox this holiday weekend. But then I ran across an estate sale late yesterday afternoon -- on Independence Day! -- while I was heading out to get the fried chicken for our 4th of July picnic.  So it is another long list for Mailbox Monday.

First, a couple of fancy books:

The Prado by Santiago Alcolea Blanch (the picture doesn't do it justice, because it is a beautiful coffee table book in perfect condition -- really lovely, and the closest I'll get to the real thing in the foreseeable future)

Charles II by Antonia Fraser (another coffee table edition full of pictures)

Then, some fun stuff:

I got the first eight volumes of a nine-volume, Book Club edition of the Sherlock Holmes books. Since I've been in a vintage mystery mood lately, I thought I could start at the source. Of course, now I want to find the ninth volume.

I found several P. D. James books. I recently read her first Adam Dalgliesh mystery, Cover Her Face, and it made me want to work my way through the series. I picked up A Taste for Death, Devices & Desires, A Certain Justice,

  1. I am drooling at your Sherlock Holmes books - they are utterly awesome. The P.D James books take me back, as I remember watching the series with Adam Dalglish in it.

  2. Oh wow, these Holmes editions are gorgeous!
I love vintage mysteries as well, but I have yet to read one of James´. The first one is probably the best to start with, right?

  7. Mmm, fried chicken. I'd like to read some P.D. James. I began listening to Cover Her Face last week, but I was having trouble paying attention to the audio, so I'll try reading it instead.

  9. Estate sales! Some great finds there! Found 3 books at an antiques mall for $2 each; A Tale of Two Cities and On Walden Pond, printed by Barnes and Noble. Not too old. Plus a book with a fancy embossed cover with an inscription dated 1901! The book was printed before they started dating the publications, but must be at the turn of the century. Your Sherlock Holmes books were quite a find!

  10. Thanks for all the visits! I got busy today with a garden project, so I will have to go on a round of my own visits tomorrow.

Vivienne -- Oooohhhh . . . Now I want to read the P. D. James books so I can watch the series. I like to read the books first, so that will be my goal.

ifyoucanreadthis -- The Holmes set is very nice. It doesn't look like they've ever been read.

bookfanmary -- I can't wait to settle in with a glass of Spanish sherry and that Prado book!

Nikki-ann -- I know! I was wondering what I was even going to post today.

Beth -- It is a very pretty set. Not old. It was published in 1994. But I've been half looking for a S.H. set so I could start from the beginning.

Donna -- I am going to have my eyes pealed for that 9nth volume! I bet it was at the estate sale, but got separated and I missed it. Now I wish I had looked closer.

Charley -- I had a little trouble getting into the audio book of Cover Her Face. I had to go back, which I never usually do. I finally went for a long walk and listened to it and I got hooked.

  12. I love coffee table books. These books have so many different subjects. It's just fun to pick one up and leaf through without feeling under pressure to read a lot of prose.

  15. What fun for you, getting to discover the Adam Dalgliesh mysteries! P.D. James is so good, but I would never want her to draw a portrait of me.
