Teaser Tuesday: Leaving Brooklyn

"Had these women, hair carved by beauticians, bodies encased in God knows what steely underclothes, ever felt what I felt? . . . If they had, how could they be sitting here calmly playing mah jongg"

Leaving Brooklyn by Lynn Sharon Schwartz (nominated for the PEN/Faulkner; new introduction by Ursula Hegi; super cool Hawthorne Books & Literary Arts edition).

I love that carved hair image!

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading, where you can find the official rules for this weekly event.

  2. This is one I really want to read. Also would really love to learn how to play mah jongg. Guess I need to get my hair carved first! Fantastic teaser.

  3. Whitney -- I had never heard of this one until Hawthorne Books sent it to me. It is really, really good.

Joy -- I think you would like it. It's so well-written that you can accept a pretty disturbing story.

I would also love to play mah jongg! I'm fascinated. But I don't think my flat hair would stand much carving.

Hannah -- It is a good teaser! It made me laugh and then it made me think about the different ways I thought as a teenager compared to now that I am an adult.

Kathy -- I think I've worn some of those steely underclothes myself! That one hit close to home!
