"Had these women, hair carved by beauticians, bodies encased in God knows what steely underclothes, ever felt what I felt? . . . If they had, how could they be sitting here calmly playing mah jongg"
Leaving Brooklyn by Lynn Sharon Schwartz (nominated for the PEN/Faulkner; new introduction by Ursula Hegi; super cool Hawthorne Books & Literary Arts edition).
I love that carved hair image!
Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading, where you can find the official rules for this weekly event.
I've heard really good things about this book. What a fun teaser.
ReplyDeleteThis is one I really want to read. Also would really love to learn how to play mah jongg. Guess I need to get my hair carved first! Fantastic teaser.
ReplyDeleteHere's mine.
Whitney -- I had never heard of this one until Hawthorne Books sent it to me. It is really, really good.
ReplyDeleteJoy -- I think you would like it. It's so well-written that you can accept a pretty disturbing story.
I would also love to play mah jongg! I'm fascinated. But I don't think my flat hair would stand much carving.
Really great teaser :)
ReplyDeletethis is a fantastic teaser - one of the best that I have read.

ReplyDeleteHannah -- It is a good teaser! It made me laugh and then it made me think about the different ways I thought as a teenager compared to now that I am an adult.
Kathy -- I think I've worn some of those steely underclothes myself! That one hit close to home!
Jennifer -- thanks for the link!
Such great descriptions in such a small package. Great choice for a teaser!
