Mailbox Monday
While waiting for a jury last Friday (we are still waiting today), I went for a walk to stave off the jitters and, not surprisingly, ended up doing a little book shopping. I found several for my Mailbox Monday list.
Encore Provence by Peter Mayle (which it turns out I already have and have already read, but this Penguin edition is so pretty that it makes me want to read it again)
A Friend From England by Anita Brookner (because I am in a Brookner mood ever since learning the term "Aga saga" from Frances Mayes's A Year in the World)
The Golden Child by Penelope Fitzgerald
Time's Arrow by Martin Amis
All would count for the Typically British challenge.

I just watched Anthony Bourdain in Provence this past weekend on On Demand and it was marvelous - made me want to go there.

Lady Q -- I love the name of your blog!
ReplyDeleteAnna -- Golden Child looks really good. I like her books, and this one sounds like it has a little mystery in it, which could make it even better.
Alayne -- You are always good about visiting others' MM posts, so I am trying to do the same.
SocrMom -- I read all his Y.I.P. books years ago, but I am ready for a complete re-read I think.
Hannah -- You snuck in while I was typing. Thanks for visiting!
ReplyDeletePretty cool finding four books that fit a challenge, happy reading!

ReplyDeleteI love that cover on the Mayle book too! I've read lots of his Provence books and loved them all!
ReplyDeleteThat cover had me right away too! It really is eye catching and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI will have to check it out.
I don't blame you about Encore Provence - Peter Mayle's books are a treat.
ReplyDeleteBook shopping is a great way to work off some stress - much healthier than many other options I could think of!
ReplyDeleteThe cover to Peter Mayle's book is beautiful!
Enjoy your new books! I agree with Anna, The Golden Child looks especially promising.

My husband and I actually had a long conversation after the Anthony Bourdain about whether we could retire somewhere like Provence. He's decided to look at the money over the long term and try to budget for it. I doubt we can afford it, but it's good to dream!
ReplyDeleteGreat books, I would love to know your thoughts of Penelope Fitzgeralds'Golden Child. I never feel like her characters reveal any emotions in her books. I'm sure this is my problem by not feeling what I should feel. I never stop giving her another chance. Had this very book in my hand last week.

ReplyDeleteI hate it when I get books that I've already read or have but then you can always pass them on to friends.
I've heard about Time's Arrow. It's not your typical book about traveling back in time. I'm tempted to read it for my Time Travel challenge. Enjoy your books! And thanks for visiting Library of Clean Reads.
