"Because Boeuf Bourguignon is meant to cook three to four hours, and it was already after ten o'clock at night. And so I made the fateful -- or maybe I should just come right out and say "very bad" -- decision to drink a vodka tonic or two while I waited."
Julie & Julia by Julie Powell
I'm about halfway through this and can understand why it is so popular -- it is a clever idea and Powell can be funny. For myself, I love the cooking parts, like the Boeuf Bourguignon story. But Powell can also be coarse and spends most of her time writing about her non-cooking life, which I didn't expect.
Mixed review on the horizon.

Nice tease. I liked the movie. Here's my tease: Teaser Tuesday: The Texicans
ReplyDeleteFun tease. I have been meaning to buy this book. My tease is here: http://rundpinne.blogspot.com/2009/09/puzzle-king-teaser-tuesdays.html
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteGood tease from a good book. And the movie is delightful!
I became curious about this book once the film came out and created a lot of buzz. The teaser lines are wonderful, so low key and with so much promise of the consequences they might be leading to.

P.S. My teaser is here: http://jockstewart.typepad.com/writers_notebook/2009/09/teaser-tuesday-south-of-broad-by-pat-conroy.html
LOL great teaser. I want to read this book at some point.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't read it yet you may find My Life in France more satisfying. It's Julia Child's memoir of her days in Paris learning to cook. It's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteMy Life in France and another JC bio are on my TBR shelf. I defintely want to read them both because this book has hardly any information about Julia Child.
ReplyDeleteI sense that the movie is different then the book.
Rose City Reader: you might be interested on my take on the movie and the book. I posted a blog a few days ago.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like the sort of decision I'd make when face with a cooking conundrum/disaster. :) Great teaser!
ReplyDeleteYou can check mine out here.
Sounds like a good lead-up to disaster! I enjoyed reading this book, but liked the movie even more :)
ReplyDeleteHere's my Teaser Tuesday.
Nice teaser. I've never liked to cook, but I used to enjoy watching Julia Child on TV, and I really want to see Meryl Streep in the movie. But I'll probably pass on the book - I'll come back and check your review.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments! I'll check out Teasers right now.
ReplyDeleteAnd, Book Bird Dog, I'll read your review -- although not until I finish mine. I'm fussy that way. I don't like to be swayed by other reviews.
Coarse is a word I've heard a few times with regard to this book. I have it sitting on my shelf- may or may not get to it soon! I look forward to your review :-)
