"But they were easily put off by the parochial aspects of living in Hollywood -- the continuous obsession with money, celebrity, and the next deal. They preferred to keep a quiet space to themselves, and if that made them seem aloof to people, that was their problem."
-- Paul Newman: A Life by Shawn Levy, discussing why Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward chose to live in a renovated barn in Westport, Connecticut.
This is a terrific book. It is packed with details, but written with such easy grace that it never gets bogged down. Levy's years as a film critic bring depth to the story by really analyzing Newman's movies instead of just providing the celebrity gossip personal side of the story.

Nice teaser! I'm intrigued by the book, even though I don't generally read many celebrity biographies. And for Paul Newman, I might make an exception!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Joy. I'll make an exception for Paul Newman. Too bad the book cover is in black and white. He had the most amazing blue eyes.
ReplyDeleteNow this is a book I'll have to pick up. My heart just fluttered looking at the cover! :)
ReplyDeleteI think I just sat and stared at the cover for like five minutes.
ReplyDeleteOh, my! Isn't he a handsome man? I didn't realize this book was out there so thanks for bringing it to my attention. It's definitely one I'll want to read. I have so much admiration for he and his wife.
ReplyDeleteI really never read celebrity anything, but I made an exception for this one because of the picture on the cover and because the author lives here in Portland.
ReplyDeleteIt is really well-written and enjoyable.
He was a beautiful man, inside and out, wasn't he?
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether or not you accept awards, but I forgot to mention that I have something for you over at my blog:
