"Wall Street."
-- from the Introduction to
Wall Street: America's Dream Palace by Steve Fraser.
That won't do. How about this, from the first chapter, "The Aristocrats":
"William Duer was running for his life."
That's better. Off to a good start. Although, at first glance, I do not know what to make of this little book. I am reviewing it for the July edition of the
Internet Review of Books. It sounded good and has received favorable press. But flipping through it, I don't know. It is short, the print is really big, and there are even illustrations. I'm not looking for a text book, but hopefully this isn't too fluffy.
Is this a novel or non-fiction? The opening sentence implies a novel-like book but the title seems to hint at facts. And the illustrations have me completely confused.
ReplyDeleteGood thing you swapped that first one out. It didn't look very promising.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point, AAC. It is a non-fiction history book, but from what I gather, relies heavily on anecdote.
