What a surprise! I put off reading Fear of Flying for years, afraid it was just some outdated, feminist apologia. I was wrong. It is funny, charming, and completely engaging. I was alternately reminded of Philip Roth, Woody Allen, Two for the Road, and Sex and the City. Loved it!

I love this book & it's wry sense of humor. Plus she introduced the concept of the zipless f**k & that's always amused me.

ReplyDeleteIt is now one of my favorites. I gave it five stars, which I reserve for the very few books I really, really like and think have real literary or historic value.
ReplyDeleteIt is probably not for everyone, because it is about sex, divorce, and adultery. But it doesn't seem particularly scandalous these days, like it must have when it first came out.
Wow! How nice to be pleasantly surprised by this one. I skipped it, too, but I guess it's a classic.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't so much that I didn't sympathize with Isadora, because to a certain extent I did. I guess it was just her reaction to her situation that got to me.

ReplyDeleteThis was the 'dirty book' of my youth, hidden under parents beds or behind other books in their shelves. I remember it have the "f" word in it, quite shocking for my youth!, and I remember enjoying the empowerment Erica Jong gives women through her characters.
